Digital Cross explores a different way of thinking about artificial intelligence inside organisations: not one general-purpose chatbot, but a collection of specialised agents with defined responsibilities, information boundaries, tools and relationships with people.
THE IDEA
From AI assistant to organisational architecture.
Many current AI systems are designed as assistants: a person asks a question and the AI responds. Digital Cross is exploring what happens when AI is instead organised around the real functions of an organisation.
Each agent represents a clearly defined role. It knows what it is responsible for, which information it may access, which tools it may use, when it must ask another role for help, and which decisions must remain with a human.
The underlying technologies — language models, retrieval systems, agents and workflow automation — already exist. The Digital Cross experiment is about combining them into a coherent organisational model built around responsibility, provenance, security and human authority.
WHY SPECIALISED ROLES?
One AI should not have to be everything.
Clear responsibility
An Archivist should preserve and retrieve knowledge. A logistics agent should understand supplies and movement. A finance agent should understand financial processes. Their responsibilities should not be interchangeable.
Limited access
Each role should receive only the information, systems and capabilities it needs. Separating roles creates clearer trust boundaries and reduces unnecessary access to sensitive information.
Human authority
Agents can observe, research, organise and recommend. Important operational, financial, ethical or sensitive decisions remain the responsibility of people.
A DIGITAL ORGANISATION
Roles can cooperate without becoming one system with unlimited access.
A mature Digital Cross environment could contain many specialised agents working alongside human staff and exchanging information through controlled interfaces.
Archivist
Institutional memory, records, provenance and retrieval.
Operations
Situation awareness, operational updates and coordination support.
Logistics
Supplies, transport, stock, procurement and movement information.
Communications
Information preparation, stakeholder communications and approved messaging.
Other roles could support finance, security, needs assessment, volunteer coordination, field operations and many other organisational functions. The precise roles would depend on the organisation rather than on a fixed Digital Cross template.
STARTING WITH ARCHIVIST
The first role came from a real organisational problem.
Digital Cross began with Archivist because institutional memory and document management were persistent challenges observed first-hand in humanitarian work.
Organisations generate enormous quantities of reports, assessments, decisions, correspondence and operational knowledge. Staff move between assignments. Context disappears. The same questions are researched repeatedly. Important knowledge can become difficult to recover even though the original records still exist.
Archivist is designed to help preserve that continuity. It can connect information across documents and time while keeping the original records authoritative and distinguishing source material from AI interpretation.
HUMANS REMAIN IN CONTROL
Agentic does not mean autonomous authority.
The objective is not to construct an organisation in which AI replaces people. It is to explore how specialised digital roles can increase organisational memory, situational understanding and capacity while preserving human responsibility.
An agent may identify a problem, assemble evidence, compare records or recommend an action. The organisation determines what it is permitted to do next. Sensitive actions can require explicit human approval, and the boundaries can differ from one role to another.
THE EXPERIMENT
Building the organisation one role at a time.
Archivist is the first working prototype. Future Digital Cross experiments will explore how additional specialised roles can cooperate securely while maintaining clear responsibilities, access controls, provenance and human oversight.
This is not presented as a claim that multi-agent AI itself is new. Digital Cross is exploring how existing and emerging technologies can be assembled into a practical organisational architecture designed around real institutional roles and responsibilities.
